The Ogun State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the success of the forthcoming measles–rubella vaccination campaign, assuring residents of adequate funding and logistics support for the exercise scheduled to run from January 27 to February 5, 2026.
The assurance was given by the Deputy Governor, Engr. (Mrs) Noimot Salako-Oyedele, who also chairs the State Task Force on Primary Health Care, during a meeting of the task force held at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Engr. Salako-Oyedele commended the Ministry of Health, health sector stakeholders, and development partners—particularly UNICEF—for their sustained support to the state’s healthcare system. She specifically acknowledged the provision of ambulance boats to improve healthcare access in riverine communities, describing the gesture as a critical intervention toward strengthening service delivery.
She praised stakeholders for their resilience in sustaining primary healthcare services despite prevailing challenges and reaffirmed the administration’s unwavering commitment, alongside Governor Dapo Abiodun’s continued support, to all primary healthcare initiatives in the state.
The Deputy Governor noted that issues raised in the report presented at the meeting would be escalated to the Governor for urgent attention. She also called on religious bodies, Community Development Associations, women groups, the National Orientation Agency, and the media to intensify sensitisation efforts across the state. According to her, greater use of social media platforms and influencers would be key to effectively reaching parents and young people.
“The request for funding has been made, and we are confident it will be approved promptly to enable us to meet our responsibilities in this very intensive exercise,” she said, stressing that the government would do everything necessary to guarantee a successful campaign.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, in her welcome address, applauded development partners, religious leaders, community-based organisations, and other stakeholders for their continued collaboration with the state government in strengthening healthcare delivery, particularly at the grassroots level. She noted that the task force meeting provided an opportunity to assess progress across the primary healthcare system and fine-tune strategies ahead of the statewide immunisation exercise.
Also speaking at the meeting, the Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Primary Health Care Board, Dr Elijah Ogunsola, presented a comprehensive report on the board’s achievements and challenges in 2025. He revealed that while most local governments recorded improvements across key health indicators, some setbacks remained, largely due to infrastructure and logistics gaps.
Dr Ogunsola disclosed that the measles–rubella campaign would last for 10 days and target children aged nine months to 14 years, describing it as one of the widest age-range vaccination exercises ever undertaken in the state. He added that over 8,000 health workers would be deployed to schools, health facilities, and communities to ensure widespread coverage.
Speaking on behalf of development partners, UNICEF representative, Mrs Moloku, commended the Ogun State Government for its consistent commitment to strengthening primary healthcare delivery. She noted that the initiative aligns with the global objective of ending preventable diseases in Africa and assured of UNICEF’s continued technical and financial support toward the successful implementation of the campaign.
The upcoming vaccination exercise is expected to significantly boost child health outcomes in Ogun State and further reinforce the government’s commitment to safeguarding the wellbeing of its citizens.
